CTB: Helena – Yannis Ritsos

Helena, a poetic work by Ritsos, fuses theater and monologue, exploring Greek mythology and the female role through the figure of Helena, central to the Trojan War. It reflects on war, memory and the condition of women in a timeless narrative, addressing universal themes such as life and the futility of war.
In Helena‘s adaptation of this play at Theatro Circo, Ritsos continues to explore human issues and historical conflicts, highlighting the crucial role of women in tragedies and historical decisions.
Yannis Ritsos (1909-1990), a renowned 20th century European poet, revolutionized classical Greek literature with political criticism. Suffering family losses and facing imprisonment for his left-wing activism, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize five times without winning.
