Go out and fight?

A historic landmark in feminism and the building of democracy in Portugal, Novas Cartas Portuguesas, by Maria Isabel Barreto, Maria Velho da Costa and Maria Teresa Horta, is the starting point for this show, which aims to reinterpret the legacy of the three Marias in a contemporary way. The title of the play is itself a question. Come out and fight? is the question posed by playwright Stela Mišković, who takes as her starting point one of the real stories she collected for this text, a heroine who endures multiple humiliations, both from her abusers and from those who have an obligation to protect her. 

Sexual Theatre – Feminist Readings of Classics is a cooperation project between four European partners – the Bosnian National Theatre in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Theatre City Festival in Montenegro, the Paul-Valéry University in France and Faz Cultura in Portugal. Seeking to make a feminist reinterpretation of literary classics from these countries, international duos of directors and playwrights collaborated throughout 2024 with local casts and women’s rights organizations to create four new shows based on original texts, which are now travelling in the form of an itinerant festival through the partner countries.
