Julho é de Jazz: Jazz on a Summer´s Day
Aram Avakian and Bert Stern
Filmed during the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival and directed by Aram Avakian and fashion photographer Bert Stern, *Jazz on a Summer’s Day* is a documentary that goes beyond the music to capture the vibrant aesthetic of the United States at that time. It features performances by musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington and Gerry Mulligan, as well as the audience’s reactions, the fashion of the era and details of everyday American summer life, culminating in Mahalia Jackson’s gospel performance. It is a historical record of the intersection between jazz, popular culture and the social context of the United States in the late 1950s.
