Elevator Opera
Sinfonietta de Braga
In ‘Elevator Opera’, a project by the re:opera collective based on a concept by the Braga Sinfonietta, four characters cross paths in a shopping mall elevator in a Portuguese-Brazilian encounter. Amid desires to go up, go down, or head in uncertain directions, a malfunction forces the group to communicate or pass the time making important calls while they wait for the technician, Ícaro Ascensão.
This contemporary production features music by Sofia Sousa Rocha, a libretto by Edward Ayres de Abreu and Tatiana Bina, and direction by Manoel Candeias. Under the musical direction of Rita Castro Blanco and the artistic direction of Joaquim Pereira, the cast—comprising Sara Braga Simões, Lilian Raquel, Mariana Fabião, and Nuno Dias—brings to life the characters trapped in the elevator. The musical performance is provided by the Braga Sinfonietta, in a show that blends drama, humor, and reflection on human coexistence.
