In the heart of a botanical garden in a German university town stands a majestic ginkgo tree. During its long life, this tree witnesses three stories: in 1908, the university welcomes its first female botany student; in 1972, another student is transformed by the simple act of observing a geranium; in 2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong conducts an experiment involving the tree. Through the tree and these three stories, Silent Friend is a tender exploration of the most human impulse—the connection with the Other.
