Accused of adultery, Ana Augusta Plácido and Camilo Castelo Branco were imprisoned for over a year at the Cadeia da Relação in Porto. She was imprisoned in June 1860; he, in October of the same year, following an adventurous escape from the law through the northern regions.
Selected for the 2026 Tokyo International Film Festival and honoured in the international selection at the 2026 São Paulo International Film Festival, Memories of Prison (‘Memórias do Cárcere’) is a fascinating and vivid portrait of Camilo Castelo Branco, based on one of the most remarkable episodes of his life: the prison as a result of the famous adultery trial that shook nineteenth-century Portuguese society. A collection of extraordinary stories of people with bitter existences — forgers, parricides, infanticides, and even a king — that Camilo heard and recounted there, with his inexhaustible creative genius, in the book Memórias do Cárcere, which the film adapts.
