Teatro do Bairro presents Construção (Construction) at Theatro Circo, a play based on the work Três Dramas Históricos (Three Historical Dramas), a trilogy written by Gertrude Stein in 1930 and published in the book Last Operas and Plays. The writer of the “continuous present” presents us with a past that is renewed through a game in which old traditions are used to invent new dramatic forms. The playwright's style is emblematic of her quest to revive a lost past in the “now” of the action, where absent/present voices emerge. This paradoxical incarnation of “pure voices” in Gertrude Stein's “memory plays” paves the way for a reflection on the meaning of “being” in the present.
