Contraponto: John Luther Adams & Philip Glass
By Orquestra do Algarve
Conducted and presented by Martim Sousa Tavares, the Algarve Orchestra presents a concert that will mark the Portuguese premiere of two works by two of the greatest composers of our time.
From John Luther Adams, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and ecologist whose catalogue blends music and nature into a single palette, we will hear the national premiere of Become River, part of the Become trilogy, which also comprises the works Become Ocean and Become Desert.
From Philip Glass, master of minimalism, the Algarve Orchestra will perform the fascinating score of Águas da Amazónia. The first eight movements represent eight rivers that flow through the world’s largest forest. The ninth and final movement represents the Amazon River, a glorious source of life on the planet and the composer’s primary source of inspiration.
Contraponto is a series dedicated to 20th- and 21st-century composition, in which we invite local, national and international ensembles and composers to guide us through the music of one of the most fertile periods for new ideas and forms.
