Composition and Improvisation in Contemporary Music

With Pedro Melo Alves

3 p.m. | Venue: Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory of Music, Braga
Free admission upon registration at participacao@theatrocirco.com

A workshop dedicated to exploring contemporary techniques of composition and improvisation found in the genesis of Pedro Melo Alves’ two works ‘Omniae Large Ensemble’ (2020, 2026). Drawing on the intersection of modern jazz, contemporary classical music and exploratory improvisation practices, the workshop will address concepts such as open formal organisation, expanded rhythmic systems, timbral research and the integration of composed and improvised material. Aimed at students of composition, jazz and instrumental performance, the session may combine analytical presentation with practical experimentation in real time.

‘Formas de Fazer’ cycle offers a series of activities running alongside the performances, with the aim of creating a space for sharing practices, methodologies and working methods of artists and collectives visiting Theatro Circo.

Pedro Melo Alves is a Portuguese composer and drummer who explores sound as a form of contemporary expression. He works across acoustic and electronic music, creating for various ensembles, stage and film, with a focus on experimentation and the free possibilities of percussion.
