INDEX: Forensis & Bill Kouligas
The Drum and the Bird
What kind of loss can be transformed into elements such as fauna, flora and geology in a heavily colonised country? The Drum and the Bird brings together the artist, designer and musician Bill Kouligas with the organisation Forensis in a multisensory exercise, based on research carried out by the Forensic Architecture collective on German colonialism in Namibia.
Through a detailed analysis of the ecological ecosystems being lost in the face of unbridled colonial exploitation, this performance combines music, testimonial accounts and spatial to highlight the voices and sounds that have been erased by time. Although it often transcends the physical world, the piece presented at INDEX 2026 seeks to give voice to the natural elements of Namibia and to question the collective colonial amnesia experienced today, yet a central part of the history of these territories.
