Julho é de Jazz: Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra & Peter Evans
When Miles teamed up with Gil Evans, sometime between the end of the 1950s and the 1960s, the golden age of big bands had already passed, but the Canadian arranger came up with a bold proposal: to record an album in the form of a suite with a jazz orchestra extended to an unusual instrumentation, including horns, clarinets, flutes and others. The record was called Miles Ahead, and it was followed by two others that crowned this fruitful partnership: Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain. The history of jazz would no longer be written without these chapters which, according to Miles, sought to bring melody back to the center of improvisation.
To reconstruct, alongside the big band, the unique sounds of these two records, the OJM invited the bold trumpeter Peter Evans. Peter Evans’ language in itself is a challenge for anyone who thought they knew the trumpet, which he takes to new expressive heights. With a superior command of all registers and techniques such as circular breathing and multiphonics, he intersperses the instrument’s traditional sound with unheard-of timbres.
With musical direction from Pedro Guedes, Peter Evans and the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra promise to close the 11th edition of July is Jazz with a show featuring Miles Davis blessing the night.
