Julho é de Jazz: O Menino d’ Olho d’ Água
Carolina Sá and Lírio Ferreira
The documentary ‘O Menino d’Olho d’Água’ (2024), directed by Carolina Sá and Lírio Ferreira, is a sensory and biographical portrait of the Brazilian musician Hermeto Pascoal. The film delves into Hermeto’s childhood in Lagoa da Canoa (Alagoas, Brazil), exploring how his albinism isolated him from working under the sun, a fact that led him to develop a deep connection with the sounds of nature and everyday objects. Through a poetic lens, the film captures the genius of ‘Universal Music’, where organic elements are transformed into avant-garde musical compositions. It is a celebration of the identity of Brazil’s Northeast and of Hermeto’s unique ability to translate the natural world into pure sound.
