In the 11th edition of Julho é de Jazz, cinema returns with two more titles that are essential to the history of jazz. Space Is the Place is a science fiction and musical experimentation film released in 1974, starring the iconic jazz musician Sun Ra. It combines Afrofuturist elements with a surreal narrative, exploring themes such as black identity, spirituality and cultural resistance. In the plot, Sun Ra returns to Earth with a mission: to save the African-American community by offering them a new home on another planet. The film stands out for its fusion of cosmic jazz and psychedelic visual aesthetics, reflecting the artist’s unique vision of music and liberation. In this way, Space Is the Place transcends conventional cinema, becoming a philosophical and sensory experience.
