An Evening with Lambchop
Kurt Wagner is returning to Portugal to present his new album, Punching the Clown, set for release on August 21 via City Slang. The Nashville band’s 17th album began after Wagner heard a song on the radio while driving: a banjo played with a minimalist chord and a small group of voices. In his (fruitless) search for the song, he discovered a form of gospel singing that originated in Scotland in the 19th century, known as Lined Out Singing, which ultimately became an inspiration for the album. The album features guitarist Andrew Broder, guest appearances by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Blake Morgan, and production by Ryan Olson.
Formed in the early 1990s, Lambchop dubbed themselves “the craziest country band in Nashville,” embracing their hometown’s musical legacy despite the obvious provocation. Over the years, they incorporated elements of soul, jazz, and country into their music, while Kurt Wagner’s voice remained the band’s essence.
