Nós, Sozinhas (We, Alone)
Sara Barros Leitão
“There’s always someone who knows someone.
There’s always one of us who knows someone who’s already done it. Others may know someone who knows how to do it.
There’s always someone who tells us the way, or someone who takes us there.
We may not want to see it, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. After all, there’s always someone who knows someone.”
Drawing on the history of abortion in Portugal—at a time when we mark (almost) two decades since its decriminalization at a woman’s request—we examine this history with women’s solidarity and networks of shared knowledge as our guiding thread, and we revisit the court cases, the two referendums, and the mobilization of civil society that transformed the country.
Nós, Sozinhas (We, Alone) is the new monologue by actress, playwright and director Sara Barros Leitão, inspired by a verse by writer and activist Maria Teresa Horta, and premiering at Theatro Circo.
