Contraponto: Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg
By Ars ad Hoc
The Contraponto cycle at Theatro Circo welcomes ars ad hoc and soprano Ana Caseiro for a new interpretation of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire op. 21 (1912), on a night when the audience will be on stage with the musicians. This seminal work of modernity established sprechgesang (spoken song) and the iconic ‘Pierrot quintet’, marking subsequent musical production. The piece, based on poems by Albert Giraud, is a sophisticated counterpoint exercise that explores timbral diversity with economy of means. Maintaining the principle of chamber music without a conductor, the concert will be subtitled. Preceding Schoenberg’s work, ars ad hoc performs the Adagio for clarinet, violin and piano, a transcription of the second movement of the Chamber Concerto that Alban Berg composed in 1925 as a tribute to his teacher, Arnold Schoenberg.
Contraponto is a cycle dedicated to 20th and 21st century composition, where we invite local, national and international ensembles and composers to guide us through the music of one of the most fertile periods in terms of new ideas and forms.
