The work of João César Monteiro
Cinema in August
For the month of August, Lucky Star – Braga Film Club has programmed four films dedicated to João César Monteiro (1939–2003), one of Portugal’s most distinctive and irreverent filmmakers. This series offers a chance to revisit some of the filmmaker’s works, linked by the common element of water, from whose banks and depths emerge narratives and symbolism that have shaped the history of Portuguese cinema.
A central figure in auteur cinema in Portugal, he began his career in the 1960s, establishing himself in the following decades with a body of work characterised by provocation and biting humour. Among his most iconic films are Recordações da Casa Amarela (1989), A Comédia de Deus (1995) and As Bodas de Deus (1999), works that earned him international recognition and established him as one of the most original voices in European cinema.
