Tortoise
Tortoise emerged from the Chicago music scene in the early 1990s, with a core lineup consisting of John McEntire (drums and production), Douglas McCombs (bass), and Dan Bitney (drums and percussion). This unusual double drum configuration became one of the most distinctive elements of their sound. Considered one of the most influential bands of the last three decades, Tortoise are pioneers of the post-rock movement, a term they helped define by fusing genres such as krautrock, avant-garde jazz, and minimalism. Over time, the lineup expanded to include musicians such as guitarist Jeff Parker and Casey Rice, solidifying their reputation as a cult band.
Landmark albums such as Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996) and TNT (1998) are considered milestones in instrumental music. After almost a decade of silence, the band returns with Touch, their eighth album, scheduled for release on October 24, 2025. The album, which already features the singles “Oganesson” and “Layered Presence,” will be the first to be released by International Anthem.
The virtuosity of its musicians is particularly noticeable in concerts, with Rolling Stone considering them “phenomenal live” and Pitchfork describing their performances as “open to all kinds of sonic possibilities.” This is a highly anticipated return to Portugal, scheduled for April 2026, with concerts at Theatro Circo and Culturgest.
