Veredas
by João César Monteiro
1978 | Portugal | Restored digital copy | 2h03
A landmark work of Portuguese cinema, Veredas draws inspiration from a series of legends, myths and folk songs to explore the cultural roots of our country. With an unconventional plot, the film narrates an allegorical journey to the heart of Portugal, evoking a spiritual and existential quest. The story follows two pilgrims who meet and make their way down through Trás-os-Montes to the sea along unknown paths. Along the way, they encounter symbolic figures and various obstacles that confront them with the mysteries of life, love and death. The film combines subtle humour with a critical view of society — hallmarks of João César Monteiro’s cinema.
