Romeu & Julieta
by Alexej Schipenko, based on William Shakespeare
This version of Romeo and Juliet transports the war between the Montagues and Capulets to 2025, with Romeo (Russian) and Juliet (Ukrainian) growing up under the conflict that began in 2014 over the possession of Crimea. Romeo is taken to a Capulet masquerade ball by the spy Mercutio, becoming a ‘hostage of love’ at Juliet’s engagement. The love between the young people is the only hope for stopping the war, in a story told to the sombre music of Leonard Cohen.
