Búzio

Búzio is a new work by Ana Baptista, which premiered at Theatro Circo as part of Supracasa, a programme supporting artistic creation in the performing arts.

Drawing on research into seaside tourism and her own seasonal experience of living in a coastal area, Ana Baptista takes us on a humorous and provocative autofictional journey. Divided into two parts, the performance invites us to reflect on the uncertainty between right and wrong, confronting the tourist perspective with the true identity of places.

The first part takes the audience on a journey through the history of tourism in Portugal, from the turn of the 20th century to the present day, questioning its economic, social and cultural consequences through memorabilia. This is followed by a more intimate perspective from the creator, who considers the future of her grandparents’ house, built on a dune in Apúlia. Ana Baptista gives voice to local residents, bringing moral dilemmas and family stories to the fore, while climate change becomes inseparable from the subject of seaside tourism. The performance culminates in a pressing question: are we witnessing the erosion of the coastline, or the erosion of biography?

The performance was presented at Theatro Circo’s Small Auditorium on 31 October 2025, as part of the Braga 25 Portuguese Capital of Culture programme.
