Antígona
SillySeason
After Oedipus Rex, the SillySeason collective returns to Theatro Circo with the play Antigone to revisit Sophocles’ tragedy and question the discretionary power of the State and the fragility of the dreams of contemporary youth. Antigone, Polynices and Haemon appear as young people of today, sometimes forgotten, sometimes condemned by policies that exclude and silence them. At a time when the future seems increasingly uncertain, George Steiner’s concern echoes: ‘We are killing our children’s dreams’ — but what dreams will survive in 2025?
The staging is the result of a collaborative process between performers and creators, combining Greek tragedy with current discourse, real testimonies and pop references. The result is a fragmented dramaturgy, made up of contrasts, collages and symbolic displacements. The collective — composed of Cátia Tomé, Ivo Saraiva e Silva and Ricardo Teixeira — reinvents tragedy as a space for resistance and political questioning. They also invite Mónica Calle, one of the most unique figures in Portuguese theatre, Inês Corino, Miguel Ponto and Patrícia Brüheim to perform.
More than a play about civil disobedience, Antígona is a call to listen and take action. A poetic portrait of youth pushed to the margins and their struggle to exist and dream.
